The coffer of hidden secrets

Everyday people confide to us many secrets and tell us not to tell anyone else. Although I have never revealed anyone’s secrets once confided with me, I see and hear many people doing it blatantly and with no embarrassment and shame. Perhaps they do not realize the harm they are doing to their character and the reputation of the person who confided the secret with them. Women are especially “good at keeping secrets.” Confide with a woman and rest assured even her friends and relatives living in far off lands would know it instantly.

The SMSs and e-mails have made this task much easier. What was previously done through slow placed mail system is now possible in real time with this tiny satanic device hidden in every pocket and a purse. Now a secret is no more within the very next minute, but for men and women of character for whom a secret is to be well kept and never to be revealed at any cost.

Charlotte Bronte explains the human heart – the coffer of hidden secrets very beautifully when she says, “The human heart has hidden treasures, in secret kept, in silence sealed; the thoughts, the hopes, the dreams, the pleasures, Whose charms were broken if revealed.”

And how very right is the observation. We in our hearts have many things that haven’t been told or shared. We have hidden dreams that have never been realized, but we continue to keep these for our own pleasure and happiness. And like a magical spell, their charm will be broken if revealed to the world.

But is it really our heart – the coffer of hidden secrets or any other part of our body? I do not from where the heart stepped into the dictionaries as repository of secrets, love, hate and other passions as it is just a piece of ordinary flesh pumping blood round the clock to keep us alive. All recordings and storing of memories, feelings, passions and emotions are in fact kept in some tiny neurons of human brain. But all over the world, it is the heart, that sort of triangular thing that is associated with all things that are in fact the domain of the brain. On Valentine Days and other occasions, we display heart rather than the brain.

May be because heart can be displayed better than not so very beautiful brain that makes it symbolic of our feelings and emotions. And I think no one around the world be willing to replace the heart with brain to be symbolized of our true passions. Therefore, so long as people are happy with their hearts, let it continue to be the coffer of our secrets – but only for some, as mostly people cannot keep it to them and reveal it and feel relaxed, unknowingly or knowingly exploding an A-Bomb for those who get affected by its radiations – may be for a lifetime.

The pursuit for Happiness

Everyone seems to be running around in pursuit of happiness, presumably. But do people succeed in doing so? Well to my reckoning generally NO. You may not agree with me on this account. But I have my own reasons to say so. One may make oneself comfortable with lot of money, but not necessarily make him a happy person. Happiness is not attributable to the rich only, as is generally the common perception. Ever seen people living in the slums? They still laugh, make merry and laugh with their hearts out when the time comes. This reminds me of a song from Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band by the Beatles, when in “She is leaving Home” a verse comes “Fun is something that money cannot buy.” And how very true. One can be poor, yet have fun and be happy, while a rich may have vaults full of gold, ornaments and dollars, but nowhere to hide and cry of the miseries he may be facing.

Edith Wharton once wrote, “There are lots of ways of being miserable, but there's only one way of being comfortable, and that is to stop running round after happiness. If you make up your mind not to be happy there's no reason why you shouldn't have a fairly good time.”So you see, happiness is something to do with your inner self, your attitudes and the way you see yourself and the world. One cannot find something named “happiness” ready for sale in the Harrods or some big super store. One may spend millions, but may still not be happy, while someone could be just happy by not paying even a penny for it.

Just forget about your miseries and misgivings for a while and then see the world through a different lens. Watch a limbless man dragging him on the streets. He could be you too. But you have all limbs intact; shouldn’t you be happy for it? While you ride a Mercedes, look at the one walking in scorching heat on burning charcoal of the road. You could have been walking like him too, but you are seated in the luxury of the air-conditioned car – doesn’t this makes you happy? The recent flood took a heavy toll of the poor living in mud houses, which were washed away along with the lifetime possessions of the poor people who could not live in the posh localities of the cities which did not get affected by the floods. Or people whose limbs were blown away in a suicide bomb attack and are left to live a de-capacitated life forever.

Let us form this day stop running after happiness – and be happy what we have. Our children, our families, their smiles and love for us. This is what matters.

Workplace Wellness – World Heart Day 2010

The theme for Word Heart Day this year is something that is needed the year round: Workplace Wellness. We bring home an ailing heart form our workplaces where pressures, intensity of work, bullying by bosses and intrigues by colleagues make people sick, morose and pulled down. The depressive tendencies finally take a toll of our heart and add to lifelong miseries. The theme of 2010 thus aimed at promoting better behaviours at our workplaces to prevent or at least reduce chances of a stroke or depression that may lead to a stroke.

It is our collective responsibility to ensure that we provide congenial work environment to our colleagues and subordinates. And if one happens to be the CEO, then his responsibility to enforce a healthy work framework in his organization so that subordinates do not take a heavy heart back home. As a sick workplace not only affects the overall working environment of the organization but the productivity as well. It also affects the families back home and ultimately adds to an unhealthy society.

We need to help each other, providing a helping hand whenever we can. We need to reach out to people finding it difficult to cope with the intensity of work and try helping them in carrying on. Smiles at workplace enhance healthy environment, specially when schedules are tight and everyone is glued to the seats rather than finding a break.

We must also bring physical activity to our workplace. Take stairs rather than elevators, go for a walk during breaks and encourage others as well. Physical active people are not only active, but also are able to take stresses more than those who are inactive. Take files to others rather than others coming to you to collect their share. This will not only induce personal touch but would also allow you a break from your seat.

Also encourage stress free moments. Instead of having a snack at your desk during breaks, go out, take a stroll while munching. A fresh air breathing would ensure filling in fresh air into your lungs and airing out that stuffy and cramped air of enclosed offices.

Be happy yourself and make others happy around you – it will extinguish the Fire Within and keep your heart smiling!!
