Attacks on American Muslims growing uglier

The world seems to be taking a turn against Muslims after the 13 November Paris massacre. While Parisians have been reported attacking Muslims, specially women wearing hijab, things are also getting worse in USA, writes Petula Dvorak, a columnist of the Washington Post.

She asserts:
Political opportunists running for president have been cooking up a heaping platter of anti-Muslim sentiment since the Nov. 13 terrorist attacks in Paris. They’ve geared us up for an epic hate giving with their ugly proposals to shut down mosques, register American Muslims and reject Syrian refugees who aren’t Christians.
She adds if you don’t think Muslims are under attack, take a look at what went down in the town of Fredericksburg last week:
The Islamic Center of Fredericksburg — a little brick building that looks like a bank branch office and has been around for 27 years — was skewered at a community meeting by a handful of seething people who see the center’s expansion plans as a threat to the very fabric of America.
The tone of some of the influential and people who matter these days is worse than it was after the Sept. 11 attacks on our own soil. Recently Donald Trump, a candidate for the American presidency has vowed for the Registration by religion - mainly to single out Muslims. He also blurts to close all mosque in the USA. Imagine what would happen to USA if he becomes the president.

Does it sounds like a country with a First Amendment that enshrines freedom of religion?

Of many examples, here is one which shows the changing tone of the Americans, writes Petula Dvorak:
In the midst of all this, a young Maryland man driving home from work spotted a woman with a flat tire stranded on the side of the road. She had an infant and a toddler with her. He stopped to help her and told her his name was Ali.
She asked whether he was Muslim. When he said yes, according to his widely circulated post on Facebook, the woman told him that she didn’t need help “from you people.”
This is just the beginning - God knows whether it gets worse or finally the sanity prevails upon people who think that all Muslims are terrorists.

Nawaz Government vis Armed Forces of Pakistan

By Brigadier Tariq Sher (R)

As a citizen of this country one wonders as to what kind of country one is living. There seems to be a crisis like situation after every forty eight hours. While there is serious law and order situation at least in three provinces besides economic and other issues; the Nawaz Govt gets into serious problem one after the other due to capacity issue. The institutions which should work together to resolve the miseries of the people are in tussle with each other. If these institutions cannot become a team; the dream will remain unfulfilled. The Nawaz Govt has a history of having problems with Pak Army. At least this time, one hoped that a better handling of relations will be seen but unfortunately it happened too fast and too early. One may say anything but a line has been drawn between the Govt and the Army, which is unfortunate. Of course, the discredit is to the Govt. It has been lead due to the following.
- Desire of Nawaz to control everything at once and by not giving space to others, while intellectually he is just an average politician.
- He lacks the ability to articulate institutions and policies at national and strategic levels.
- His decision making process is slow, as he depends on others for input and remains divided thus making delayed decisions.
- At the time of crisis, standing by a media group for personal relations rather than with the aggrieved institution (which was insulted) thus making a grave mistake of judgment and displaying lack of statesmanship.
It will be worthwhile to discuss another actor in this issue and it is the Geo channel. Geo, over a period of time has grown in to a monster with no internal controls and never bothered to abide by any law, values or code of conduct. Its vocal and pseudo intellectual anchors and producers said what they felt and due to its very strong relations it had actually made individuals and institutions hostage. They were the policy and opinion makers in Pakistan and enjoyed unlimited control. However, these anchors never realized that they are simple pawns of a Seith( Mir Shakeel) and serving foreign agenda. Their arrogance and conduct is more like O’Reilly of FOX TV. The Geo started crossing the red line for many years now.

Therefore, it is the considered opinion of the security establishment that Geo is working against the national interest of Pakistan. Geo’s management and anchors were advised to show restrain in the larger national interest of Pakistan but due to various interests they never paid any heed to it. Geo never tried to understand the national security and concerns of those guarding geographical/ ideological frontiers of Pakistan, on only one pretext i.e, “freedom of media”. One only hoped that Geo should have learnt something from Indian and American media. It was on an unfortunate day, when there was a murder attempt on Hamid Mir that Geo went out of its mind in share arrogance and crossed all limits of national security, PEMRA rules, decency, values and respect to others. While no institution is untouchable, the critique has to be balanced and based on facts alone. Geo’s action was not only condemned by the nation at large including Pakistani media but the Ministry of Defence had to ultimately move against it to stop such kind of conduct in future.

While all this happened, the supreme commander of the Armed Forces was found on the opposite side. His ministers’ views were reflection of his policy. The concerned ministers failed to realize the gravity of the situation and reacted late and that too unwisely is a sad part of the episode. Raymond Davis was a CIA contractor’s employee. He was not even an employee of CIA. But once he got in to trouble in Pakistan the President of USA not only declared him a diplomat but sent John Kerry to Pakistan and got him out of Pakistan. That much for the honour of CIA and US national security by the US President. On the contrary, misjudgement of Nawaz in this situation remains a case study in our history. The Army and ISI are the key institutions and major stake holders especially in the war against terrorism and national security; therefore, they need to be valued on their merit.

Present obtaining environment are very favourable to democracy and every citizen of this country wants to see it succeeding. One hopes and prays that Musharraf was the last dictator of Pakistan’s history and everyone supports it including the khakis. The tenure of Gen Kayani bears testimony to it. While the Govt and the Army will enjoy cordial relations soon, the policy of Geo channel remains stubborn /misplaced and it has not learnt any lesson. An organization, which fails to learn from its mistakes, is likely to falter. Geo will continue to be a bad example in Pakistani media in foreseeable future.
One always prayed that Govt - Army relations should have been most cordial, as there are so many important issues that need immediate attention but it did not happen so. The way forward is that the Govt must strategize to keep cordial relations with the Armed Forces and its Institutions and pay them due respect, which they deserve and stand by them when required. After all, the Prime Minister is the supreme commander and should have the ability to understand the national security concerns of his important institutions. The Army must also understand that it is subservient to the civilian government and should address its concerns in the right spirit and appropriate forum. For Geo, one can only pray.

EU Model and Pakistan – India Peace

By Brig Nadir Mir

Pakistan and India need peace. However the much quoted EU Model does not apply in the Pakistan – India context. The historical perspective, Geopolitics and national aspirations are radically divergent.

The EU Model

Present day European Union evolved out of old Europe. Europe for all its diversity had basic commonalities. The concept of unifying Europe was an old dream. The old Europe was not only conquered by force but also interwoven by Royal marriages. The ideals of the French Revolution, followed by others, spread into the length and breadth of Europe. Napoleon and Hitler both had attempted on a grand scale to unify Europe by force but failed.

EU evolved since the Europeans (for all their diversity) had one faith Christianity, one white race or the heartland of western culture, similar political aspirations (post Second World War and post Cold War). The common enemy Soviet Union vanished, the common friend USA geopolitically sought EU as a global partner. Economic interests coincided in EU. Despite economic interests and cultural affinity, there would have been no EU, if the basic factors had not been in place.

Farewell to Hegemony

Through centuries of war fighting, the European Nations bid a final farewell to hegemony. The demise of Soviet Union meant no foreign state could threaten Europe. Intra European sentiments were all anti hegemony. The major European powers, UK, France, Germany, Spain, Italy and Russia had forsaken all forms of hegemony. The quest for dominance had been expelled from the European mindset. The EU weltanschauung or world view was basically peace and humanity driven.

Conflict Resolution

The EU took shape since basic conflicts stood resolved. Border conflicts, territorial claims, ideological issues, other flash points and sources of tension were mutually finished, reconciled or disappeared from European politics.

Balance of Power

The EU era was ushered by a new semblance of power balance in Europe. The EU states big and small are equal partners. Neither did UK aim at naval preponderance, nor Germany massive land forces. This new amicable political culture and geopolitics of peace contributed to maintaining balance of power.

In essence for all the amiable talk, EU would not have existed or functioned until the quest for hegemony vanished, conflict resolution took place and balance of power was maintained between member states.

The environment of Pakistan – India is not only radically different from EU, but in fact quite antagonistic.

Pakistan – India historical perspective

In 1947, Pakistan – India were created as Nation States out of British India. No Indian Nation or republic existed before that. Various empires had conquered large swaths of the subcontinent historically, but none completely. Even the British in their heydays dealt with over 500 princely states with varying status.

Two Nation Theory

The nation state of Pakistan was created to provide equal status, secure environment and a prosperous future for Pakistani citizens.

In the wider sense, it means more than a separate homeland for Muslims of the subcontinent. Muslim minorities exist in numerous states of the world, but no Pakistan has been created there. Pakistan was created because post British India was not good enough for Muslims. Pakistan was not only created for a separate religion, but different culture, aspirations and world view. Pakistan’s cultural links with Turkic world, affinity with Iran – Gulf Arabs, commonalities with Afghans created Pakistan as a melting pot of cultural identities.

Multi Regional State

Pakistan is not merely a South Asian State like India. Pakistan is fast emerging as a multi regional state. Pakistan’s Geo economics bonding with China and Central Asia at Gwadar is its new destiny. Even strategically China is Pakistan’s true partner, with whom India is mistakenly racing.  Pakistan’s affinity with Arabian Peninsula’s religious, cultural and economic ties is likely to increase.

Pakistan – India’s Conflicts
  • Kashmir Until India relents on Kashmir, peace and stability will remain elusive.
  • Afghanistan post US The post US ‘New Afghanistan’ situation is likely to increase competition between Pakistan – India. Dr. Maria Sultan’s recently published brilliant book, ‘Afghanistan 2014: Decision Point’ aptly highlights the emerging environment.
  • Chah Bahar – Central Asia India’s maritime, trade movements to Chah Bahar will heighten tensions with Pakistan in new uncharted waters. Delhi’s bid to develop Chah Bahar in Iran to out flank Pakistan’s Gwadar 70 miles to the west en route to Central Asia enhances rivalry.
In a nutshell, the Geopolitics of Pakistan – India region is confrontational rather than cooperative. The present regime in Pakistan is trying to befriend India.  The problem is the disciples of ‘Global India’ have developed a world view in which they assume India to be a global player. The recent rift between US – India on an Indian diplomat’s mistreatment in USA is a case in point. Indians are shocked that the established superpower USA did not defer to the Rising Global India! Indian culture does not believe in equality between in its own people, leave alone with smaller neighbours!

As examined the relationship between EU States has no resemblance in Pakistan – India context. The younger generation of Indians has antipathy for Pakistan and China. The Indian Air Chief talks on Indian Aero Space Power reach beyond Pakistan to Central Asia. The Indian Navy aspires and develops its Navy for sea control from Straits of Hormuz to Malacca Straits making a clash with Pakistan Navy inevitable.

The ‘Peace Party’ is right in the view that Pakistan – India need peace. It is wrong in the view that peace can be achieved without a comprehensive solution.

The views expressed are that of the author and are a food for thought and analysis by those who view the resolution of Pakistan-India relations in a most amicable way.

Are we heading towards the Action-Replay of 1977 elections?

By Akhtar Malik

It was a sunny morning of 7 March 1977 when a democratically elected government was to hold general elections so that a smooth transfer of power could take place. PPP under the leadership of ZA Bhutto was still considered to be the most popular party. In order to counter PPP, almost all the opposition parties joined hands under the name of Pakistan National Alliance (PNA) and started an aggressive campaign.

When the results were announced Pakistan Peoples Party won 155 out of 200 seats in the National Assembly. The results of the elections astonished political pundits both inside and outside Pakistan. Pakistan National Alliance was only able to win 36 National Assembly seats. To add insult to injury, the Alliance could only win 8 out of 116 seats of the National Assembly from Punjab, and failed to win even a single seat from Lahore and Rawalpindi, cities in which they had organized big public gatherings and processions.

Pakistan National Alliance leaders rejected the results and protested that there had been a systematic rigging of election results to defeat them. At many places, particularly where the PNA candidates were strong, the polling was alleged to have been blocked for hours. There were also reports that PPP armed personnel in police uniform removed ballot boxes. Marked ballot papers were also found on the streets in Karachi and Lahore. Rumours quickly circulated that the results in key constituencies were issued directly from the Prime Minister’s office. PNA boycotted the provincial elections which were to be held on 10 March. PPP resorted to bogus voting merely to prove that voters had come to cast their ballot. Overall PPP gained 99 percent seats. The voting figures showing the success of the PPP candidates often surpassed the actual number that turned up for voting.

The opposition demanded immediate resignation of Bhutto, chief election commissioner, and as well as the government, proposing the idea of holding new elections under the supervision of Supreme Court of Pakistan. Bhutto refused the demands, Wali Khan and the Alliance decided to bring their party workers onto the streets, to break law deliberately, and to confront the police and security forces. Mr Bhutto decided to negotiate matters with the PNA. Negotiations began on June 3 and went through 13 rounds.

During the negotiations the opposition demanded that since clear evidence of rigging in 28 constituencies were available with them so an inquiry should be conducted in those places only. Bhutto issued a notification whereby Election Commission was ordered to carry our thorough investigation of the rigging charges within two months wherever the opposition had lodged complaints. Election Commissioner of Pakistan Justice Sajjad Ahmad Jan carried out the investigation and submitted report to the PM.

According to report the elections were rigged, bogus / unverified votes were polled in all the 28 alleged constituencies. Mr. Bhutto would have given the orders for re-elections in those places but one thing became his weakest point. Those constituencies also included the constituency of Yahya Bakhtiyar in Quetta who happened to be a very close friend of Bhutto. In a bid to save his friend Bhutto cancelled the notification of inquiry in rigging and thus let the situation worsen till his government was toppled by Gen Zia on 5 July 1977.

What is happening now seems to be an action replay of the unfortunate events of 1977. Soon after the elections of 11 May 2013 there were complaints of rigging from almost all parties and there are over 400 petitions lying in SC / ECP on this. PTI had asked for an inquiry on thumb impressions in only 4 constituencies. Ch. Nisar said that the government is ready to inquire into 40 and not mere 4 ones. Later he said that there should be inquiry in all 272 constituencies. NADRA had carried out thumb impression checking in Karachi and declared that about 50 to 60 thousand votes were unverified.

When the question of checking came to NA-118 Lahore from where Sardar Ayaz Sadiq had been declared successful against Imran Khan, the Chairman NADRA Tariq Malik was removed from service. The case of rigging is in SC and opposition party PTI is adamant to get the verification at all cost. The tension between PML-N and opposition is increasing with each passing day. The question is: Will PML-N try to save their stalwart Ayaz Sadiq. Speaker NA from disqualification and humiliation at the peril of democracy and their government?

I have yet to see politicians learning lessons from their checkered history.

This is how America 'decides' to go to war [video] - Point to Ponder

Since 9/11, the world has not seen a second of peaceful day as there is war going on in some corner of the country and the sphere is expanding.

Interestingly, all countries where people are dying happen to be Islamic countries - no other country of the world is as ferocious as the Islamic countries under war - at the behest of the USA and in connivance of its allies and the UN.

But how decisions to go to war are taken? I came across this video and was simply stunned. Listen to American army and former CIA General Wesley Clark, who unfolds the US plan to invade and take over 7 countries, Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, Libya  Somalia, Sudan and Iran, even before USA invaded Afghanistan.

The first part of the plan was revealed 10 days after 9/11 and was expanded to included the other nations. Clark is quoted as saying the invasion wasn't based on links to Al-Qaeda or any other intelligence reports but just because the US has an army that is great at taking over other nations. And some of the reasons given even made the audience laugh.

Go ahead and hear for yourself:

Honour thy Soldiers - Point to Ponder

Recently, the JI's head Mr Munawar Hussain has made some very compelling remarks about the soldiers who lay down their lives in line of their duty and in service of the country. The comments came after killing of the TTP chief by missiles fired from the US drones in the North Waziristan town of Miran Shah.

The statement has most certainly hurt the families of those countless brave men who perished fighting the menace of militancy and terrorism that has plagued the country for more than a decade now and has resulted into the death of thousands of civilians, specially while offering prayers.

Perhaps the clerics fail to understand the essence of fighting in the name of Allah and are more sympathetic toward the militants rather than those fighting them to rid the country of the militancy, so that the population in general could live in peace.

The statement as cited above has certainly divided the nation on the issue and morale of the men in uniform have certainly been given a big blow. For unfortunate people like us, perhaps our soldiers should not be fighting for us. But I mus commend these brave young men who still go forward into terrorists infested areas and fight them out.

This brings me to a small anecdote that I saw on the Facebook and I felt like sharing it with my readers just to show them how great nations respect their soldiers. No one ever demeans their services and honour them when they return in the national flag draped coffins. This is what great nations do - unlike us who humiliate their soldiers for point scoring and sympathising with those who take away our sons.

Now read this anecdote 'Airline Lunch' by Barry Whiteley

I put my carry-on in the luggage compartment and sat down in my assigned seat. It was going to be a long flight from Gatwick. I'm glad I have a good book to read Perhaps I will get a short sleep,' I thought.

Just before take-off, a line of British Army Youngsters came down the aisle and filled all the vacant seats, totally surrounding me. After flying for about an hour, I decided to start a conversation. 'Where are you blokes headed?' I asked the young man seated nearest to me.

‘Cyprus . We'll be there for two weeks for special training, and then we're being deployed to Afghanistan’.

An announcement was made that lunches were available for five pounds. It would be several hours before we reached Cyprus, and I quickly decided a lunch would help pass the time.

I overheard a soldier ask his mate if he planned to buy lunch. 'No, that seems like a lot of money for just an airline lunch. Probably wouldn't be worth five Quid’. His mate agreed. I looked around at the other soldiers. None were buying lunch.

I walked to the back of the plane and handed the flight attendant a fifty Pound note. 'Take a lunch to all those soldiers..' She grabbed my arms and squeezed tightly. Her eyes wet with tears, she thanked me. 'My young bloke was a soldier in Iraq, it's almost like you are doing it for him..'

Picking up ten lunch-boxes, she headed up the aisle to where the boys were seated.

She stopped at my seat and asked, 'Which do you like best - beef or chicken?'

'Chicken,' I replied, wondering why she asked..

She turned and went to the front of plane, returning a minute later with a dinner plate from first class. This is your thanks.

After we finished eating, I went again to the back of the plane, heading for the rest room. An old bloke stopped me. 'I saw what you did. I want to be part of it. Here, take this.' He handed me twenty-five Pounds..

Soon after I returned to my seat, I saw the Captain coming down the aisle, looking at the aisle numbers as he walked. I hoped he wasn't looking for me, but noticed he was looking at the numbers only on my side of the plane. When he got to my row he stopped, smiled, held out his hand, and said, 'I want to shake your hand.' Quickly unfastening my seat-belt I stood and took the Captain's hand. With a booming voice he said, 'I was an army pilot a long time back. Once someone bought me lunch. It was an act of kindness I never forgot.' I was embarrassed when applause was heard from all of the passengers.

Later I walked to the front of the plane so I could stretch my legs. A kid who looked about 18 was sitting about six rows in front of me reached out his hand, wanting to shake mine. He left another twenty-five Pounds in my palm.

When we landed I gathered my belongings and started to depart. Waiting just inside the aeroplane door was a man who stopped me, put something in my shirt pocket, turned, and walked away without saying a word. Another twenty-five Pounds!

Upon entering the terminal, I saw the soldiers gathering for their trip up to their training area.. I walked over to them and handed them seventy-five Pounds. 'It will take you some time to reach your training area. It will be about time for a sandwich. God Bless You Blokes.'

Ten young blokes left that flight feeling the love and respect of their fellow Brits. As I walked briskly to my car, I whispered a prayer for their safe return. These soldiers were giving their all for our country. I could only give them a couple of meals. It seemed so little...

A Serviceman is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank cheque made payable to'My Country' for an amount of 'up to and including my life.'

That is Honour. In some countries, the Politicians are not only robbing their Citizens with Millions and Billions of Dollars but are also robbing the DEAD Soldiers who Died for the Country and Countrymen...

I hope I have been able to put across what I wanted to say - honour thy soldiers!!

Drone attack in Hangu - the first US drone attack in settled areas of Pakistan

Residents stand at the site of a drone attack on a seminary in Hangu district, Nov 21, 2013. — Photo by Reuters

A US drone attack on a madrassa in Hangu area that killed 6 persons has created a shock wave across the whole country. This is because the US has widened their domain of international terrorism to settled areas and people feel that now no city of Pakistan is virtually safe from drones. This has happened because of apathy of the government who is as mum as usual on this serious issue also. Is the government now waiting for drones to attack people in Kohat, Peshawar and then Islamabad?

American war on terror was brought in Pakistan during Pervez Musharaf era. It was nurtured and made more lethal during Zardari-led PPP government and now PML-N  government is not seen in a position to take any stance that could rescue the country from perpetual disaster. The main reason for this apathy is that the present set-up has been brought to power with a 'stolen 'mandate' to achieve specific objectives by international players.

The US has rightly selected the most coward, the most spineless and the most timid ruler in the history of Pakistan to extend their drone attacks beyond tribal areas. They fully know that the NS govt will never take a slightest step against them because of obvious reasons. Had the elections been conducted in fair and free manner, the genuine leadership would have taken pragmatic steps, and by now the US would have been compelled to revisit their drone policy.

This is not a good omen for NS government  Coupled with unprecedented price hike, ever-depleting economy, an uncontrollable inflation and deteriorating law and order situation, the danger bells for the government have started ringing much earlier than expected.

If the NS government is unable to retrieve the situation by taking drastic and revolutionary steps, I am afraid the government may not survive by the end of next year. In case NS feels that he is genuinely incapable of retrieving the situation on any pretext, then instead of waiting for chaos and anarchy to knock at the door, he should better admit his failure in public and resign.

There is no point in clinging to power at the peril of the country. But in all my sincerity, I want to see NS and his  government survive with dignity and success.

Point to Ponder - Where has everything gone

I came across this eye opening post at an equally eye opener at Facebook - lamenting and airing true sentiments to what we are facing today.

While I request all readers of this post to listen to the video at Facebook (in FULL) and ponder over the grave environment we are faced with, I also request the following poetry to be read too - shared by Babad Ahmed on the same Facebook page:

We need to ponder over it.

Pakistan Faces 4th Generation War on its Soil

The fateful events of 9/11 placed Pakistan under immense pressure. Though no Pakistani was involved in any act of terror across the globe the whole world was made to believe that Pakistan is the actual source of terrorism. America’s war on terror pushed Pakistan in real terrific situation and has damaged us only next to Iraq and Afghanistan. It was not our war but when Pakistan became an ally of America the whole garbage of war was transferred to Pakistan. Pakistan Army as usual was on the forefront of this war and had bore the major brunt of its consequences. Despite all odds Army has fared well in this war also. Whatever task was given to Army it completed it with professional dexterity and devotion. May it be the cleansing of Swat from the occupation of the Taliban or campaign in South Waziristan to liberate this rugged country from terrorists Army has never disappointed the nation.

The question arises; why after all the Army has always been condemned is still the target of criticism? The Army had already distanced itself clearly from the politics and has suffered the worst kind of attrition while saving the nation from terrorists. But still Army and ISI remain the major scapegoat for all the ills that the nation is facing. Talk of any segment of society- the electronic media, the politicians, the civil society organizations, the NGOs, the human rights organizations, you will find them unanimous in criticizing and condemning Army on one pretext or the other. To find reasons we will have to slightly go back in history.

David Ben Gurion, the first Israeli Prime Minister commented on Pakistan as follows:

The world Zionist movement should not be neglectful of the dangers of Pakistan to it. And Pakistan now should be its first target, for this ideological State is a threat to our existence. And Pakistan, the whole of it, hates the Jews and loves the Arabs. This lover of Arabs is more dangerous to us than the Arabs themselves. For that matter, it is most essential for the world Zionism that it should now take immediate steps against Pakistan. Whereas the inhabitants of the Indian peninsula are Hindus whose hearts have been full of hatred towards Muslims, therefore India is the most important base for us to work there from against Pakistan. It is essential that we exploit this base and strike and crush Pakistanis, the enemies of Jews and Zionism, by all disguised and secret plans”.(David Ben Gurion, the first Israeli Prime Minister Jewish Chronicle, 09 August 1967)
The shocking statement of the founder Prime Minister of Israel has some cardinal points. One, Pakistan is an ideological state. Two, Pakistan is more dangerous for Israel than even the Arabs. Three, the world Zionist movement has been told to take action against Pakistan and four, India will be the base to used by Zionists to crush Pakistan.

The world in general is in the grip of Zionism. The Zionists control the economy, business, finances, media, journalism and even the politic of the world. The ruling political elite of most of the countries is being controlled by Zionists. The war and peace is also made in the world by this organization. So when the Zionist movement is told to fight against and crush Pakistan one can imagine how all the concerned actors across the globe would be operating.

A strong and stable Pakistan armed with nuclear weapons is just not acceptable by the Zionists. With the help of sole super power, the US, its allies the NATO and even its pawn in the Middle East, the Zionists have launched a well planned, well coordinated and well executed campaign against Pakistan which is called ‘Fourth Generation War’. America attacked Iraq on the pretext of locating and destroying weapons of mass destruction in Iraq which they didn’t possess. Pakistan possesses nuclear weapons and has declared it as such. So America could not possibly attack Pakistan the way they did in Iraq because of the fear of any unexpected reaction from Pakistan. Fourth Generation War was the only effective tool to deal with Pakistan. The sole aim is to neutralize the nuclear assents and render Pakistan as an insignificant country in the region.

Pakistan Faces Fourth Generation War on its Soil

Fourth Generation War is essentially a civilian (non-military) doctrine which is characterized by attack on ideology, culture and social values, small combat actions by non state actors, media and information warfare and psychological operations. In such warfare the media persons and journalists are purchased for propagating a set pattern of information and the target nation is broken into various segments on racial, sectarian and linguistic grounds. The target country is isolated on diplomatic forums and incapacitated in economic fields. The corrupt and compromised journalists, political analysts, media owners, TV anchors, advertising companies, sold out religious scholars / teachers and the fifth columnists form the frontline soldiers in this kind of warfare. The terrorist organizations are created, paid and trained to carry out sabotage activities in the country, the main targets are the military installations, defense and security personnel and intelligence setups, with an aim to demoralize/ incapacitate the fighting machinery of the country. Such war may not see a full fledge operation of conventional forces like army, navy and air force of the attacker but the enemy keeps its combatant forces in ready position for bringing them into action at short notice.

4th generation war started on Pakistani soil when America attacked Afghanistan in 2001 in order to topple the Taliban regime who was allegedly providing safe heavens to Al Qaeda leadership and Osama Ben Laden. It seems that real aim of America was not to eliminate terrorism while it attacked Afghanistan but was to create a foothold from where they could control the politics and economy of the whole region.

Before 9/11 the Taliban were not the enemies of America. Despite of their myopic view about Islam and crude way of governance they never attempted to carry out any terrorist activity against the West. It was a well known fact that after being attacked by American forces the Taliban will spill over to Pakistan territory for taking refuge. The restive tribal areas provided excellent sanctuaries to them both from geographical and social point of view. It was beyond the capability of Pakistan security forces either to stop the infiltration of Taliban or to evict them after they had infused with local population. America’s policy was to entangle Pakistani forces in a fight against Taliban in tribal area which they knew, was a mechanism of total disaster for Pakistan. They also knew that once Pakistan Army got involved in tribal area it will not be possible for them to extricate.

On the Afghan side the situation of war was that despite mustering forces from the whole world under the flag of NATO, America could not subdue the Taliban. Throughout the decade of war the Taliban had been controlling about 40 % of Afghanistan’s territory. They had been levying toll tax on NATO containers, holding press conferences and punishing offenders through ‘Sharia’ courts. The growth of poppy continued unabated right under the nose of NATO forces. The conclusion can be drawn that the US and allies never wanted to eliminate the Taliban. They just put that much effort which was necessary to maintain a semblance of conflict going on in the area. They had other agenda in their minds.

Nurturing of Militant and Terrorist Groups in Pakistan

When Pakistan Army got fully involved in tribal areas as per their plans, they created Tehreek e Taliban Pakistan (TTP). This group was funded, trained and given intelligence / logistic support by CIA, Mossad and later by Indian RAW. Other banned outfits from Pakistan like Lashkar e Jhangwi (LeJ) also assembled under their umbrella. This was the enemy which was ‘invented’ for us. Our new enemy wore Islamic attire, kept beards, carried flags having ‘Kalima’ on them and shouted slogans of ‘Allah o Akbar’. No doubt our nation was totally confused on this issue. Some consider them enemies and others call them ‘Mujahideen’. The population in tribal areas was the worst hit by this confusion. Not surprising that the nation has paid the price of 40000 lives including 5000 troops.

Pakistan was never allowed to make peace in tribal areas. All its efforts to negotiate with militants were thwarted by America by killing people like Mulla Nazeer. The drone attacks, the CIA /Blackwater operations on Pakistani soil, provision of safe heavens to our terrorists like Mulla Fazlullah, Brahmdakh Bugti, Harbiyar Marri and TTP leadership, all resulted in a planned attrition of our Army.

In Baluchistan BLA has been resuscitated by CIA with the help of Indian RAW and Russian ex KGB agents in 2002 which had gone dormant after the withdrawal of Soviet Union from Afghanistan in 1988. The aim is put pressure on Pakistan Army by involving it in counter insurgency and to weaken the hold of Pakistan government on Baluchistan so that it can be separated from Pakistan at an appropriate time. Baluchistan has some 45 to 55 training camps, with each camp accommodating from 300 to 550 militants. Based on the geographic spread of training camps there is a triangle of extreme instability in Baluchistan with Barkhan, Bibi Nani (Sibi) and Kashmore as three cardinal points. The terrorist leaders like Barahmdagh Bugti and Harbiyar Marri are on self imposed exile where they frequently get in touch with officials of CIA, RAW and get necessary funds / intelligence from them.

In Karachi the instability has been ensured through terrorism. Target killing, ‘Bhatta’ mafia, land grabbing mafia, kidnapping for ransom have been initiated and maintained through militant wings of various political parties who are being provided protection through politicization of police and inept / corrupt judicial system. These elements have now been reinforced by terrorists from banned outfits and underground crime gangs. The aim is to weaken the writ of Pakistan government in Karachi so that it can be separated from rest of Pakistan at an opportune moment.

Achievements of Army in War against Terror

Pakistan Army was plunged into American war on terror by Pervez Musharaf with a total disregard to our own security concerns. It was well known fact that Army was neither trained / equipped nor was prepared to undertake an unconventional war like this. But once Army was put into such a strenuous test it came out victorious. The terrorists had occupied Sawt by 2009 and were threatening to march on to Islamabad. It was sheer brilliance of military leadership and enormous courage of the officers and men of the security forces who turned the tables on our enemies once threatening to occupy Islamabad. No Army of the world can match the achievement of our security forces who in the Malakand / Swat Operation took so short a time to dislodge the militants who were entrenched on the heights in such a vast mountainous terrain and were in effective control of the area for some years.

The Army, whenever launched to undertake operations, has delivered beyond expectations surprising our enemies. The details of Swat operation are not likely to be known because of our apathy to accurately record events and making analytical studies of such operations. The results of this operation are however so obvious that one can confidently assert that no Army of the world today could have achieved such success in such a short time in so vast a mountainous terrain. No helicopter pilot in any other Army of the world could start his day at 4 a.m. and switch off by 11 p.m. ferrying troops to be placed on heights, drawing hostile fire in the process. This was a routine with Pakistan Army's helicopter pilots during those operations.

Same was true for South Waziristan where Pakistan government had totally lost its writ. The Army not only restored the writ but also started developmental projects which the local population had seen for the first time in their lives. However it is unfortunate that no civilian government has ever been able to enforce its writ though Army had provided enough space for the civilian leadership in Swat, S. Waziristan and other parts of tribal areas. These areas are still under control of the Army and civilian administration is shy of taking responsibility anywhere.

Anti Army Role of Pakistani Media and Journalists

Despite immense sacrifices the Army bashing continues from different quarters. They are still blamed on the TV channels by media personnel, journalists and politicians for interfering in civil affairs ‘from behind the curtains’. They are held responsible for missing persons in Baluchistan and mutilated bodies. Not a single criminal / terrorist who were arrested for attacking GHQ, Mehran Naval Base, Kamra PAF Base has been punished by our judiciary. The irony is that Zain Bugti is caught red handed while transporting illegal lethal weapons and he is set free by the courts, but same courts are quick to order registration of FIR against Army personnel for the ‘murder’ of Nawab Akbar Bugti!

One will be astonished to see that many diverse segments of society are on the same page as far as Army bashing is concerned. People like Asma Jahangir who are known to be so-called ‘liberals’ are on the one side of extreme while TTP is on the other side of the extreme. But both are one and the same as far as hostility towards Pakistan Army is concerned. Asma Jahangir always blames Army and the ISI for missing persons, meddling in politics, hatching conspiracies against democracy etc. TTP along with its auxiliary outfits physically attacks Army and takes ‘revenge’ against America. How funny that a TTP leader is killed in American drone attack and the revenge is taken from Pakistan Army!

Electronic media is on the forefront in terms of Army bashing. Just listen to the talk shows and discussions conducted by anchors and journalists like Hamid Mir, Kamran Shafi and you will find how they spit venom against Army. They are performing their duties very well according to instructions issued by their masters. They will not miss a smallest chance to punch the Army and the ISI. They will ask embarrassing and leading questions from the guests and will only highlight the weak points of the Army. Have you ever heard them appreciating the role of Army in assisting people in natural calamities like floods, earthquakes? Has the Army ever been valued for their policies of non interference in politics for the last five years? So much so, that the coverage of the heroic deeds of our ‘Shaheeds’ and ‘Mujahids’ in the past and recent wars has been drastically cut down on the media. You will hardly find any commemorative programs on Defense Day (6 Sep) in praise of our defense forces. But you have to be very observant and have a keen eye and ears to feel their hatred against Army and Pakistan. The anti Army propaganda is so strong that even some ex Army persons - turned- intellectuals also do not remain behind anyone else to bash and criticize Army.

Media is an important tool in opinion building and creating awareness but you will hardly find any meaningful discussion on media that would address our security concerns. They will never highlight the colossal increase in Indian defense budget, rather will always be obsessed with even a slight increase in our defense budget. While sitting in front of Pakistani TV channels at times we have a dismal feeling as if we are watching Indian channels instead. Have you seen any TV programs which highlights Two-nation Theory and Ideology of Pakistan, particularly in the month of August? You will mostly find those guest speakers on TV channels who give their logic against the ideology of Pakistan. No one would focus on the need of promoting our ideology which draws its strength from injunctions of Islam. This deficiency was badly felt in the ongoing month of August which is marked by our ‘Youm e Azadi’. It was so obvious to see that no TV anchor wore the insignia of a Pakistani flag on the onset of August as was the practice in previous years. Moreover it was astonishing to learn that not a single national song (milli naghma) has been composed and sung in Pakistan in the last 10 years. Is this the way the ‘living nations’ survive?

The war against Ideology of Pakistan and Army is going on unabated on all fronts. The media persons, journalists and anchor persons have been purchased to propagate anti Pakistan, anti Army and anti Islam concepts. Judiciary has been instructed not to take any action against terrorists and black sheep in media unless ‘concrete proof’ is available, and government of the day has been ‘briefed’ not to take drastic steps against terrorists of TTP, BLA and Karachi gang war. This is the reason why the government has not yet declared BLA as traitors and has refrained from dealing with them accordingly. On diplomatic front the governments have been told not to pursue a policy that goes against the interests of India, America and some Arab countries, may it be at the peril of Pakistan. The government has been stopped from raising any question about TTP and BLA terrorists who are residing in safe heavens in Afghanistan, UK and Europe. In order to further squeeze Pakistan Army, India has been prompted to carry out violations on LoC so that further pressure is put on the Army to stretch its already depleted and meagre resources.

International Zionist lobby is active against Pakistan in the light of the statement of Israel’s founding PM that Pakistan must be crushed by using India as a base. So it is not surprising that a close nexus exists between India and Israel. Army bashing in Pakistan must be seen in the backdrop of this scenario.
