Antidote of load shedding

I saw an interesting video shared on the facebook, which very pertinent to our present environment, "darkened" by excessive load shedding. If this "technology" is made available in the country, it will be an effective antidote for the menace of load shedding.

Sugar is injurious to health – Health Ministry

We have been reading similar signs on the cigarette pickings that smoking is injurious to health, courtesy the Health Ministry. But this doesn’t seem to have any effect on the smokers as the cigarettes continue to sell as before and the tobacco growers and cigarette manufacturing companies continue to earn bag loads of profits. Who cares of the long term consequences if one is addicted to smoking?

Dejected by the mere notifications on the cigarette packs, the Ministry of Health is about to issue a new notification, “Sugar is injurious to health.” This time the ministry has done its home work and with the collaboration of Ministry of Food, which has allowed the price hike of sugar to an unprecedented level of over Rs. 100 a kg. Now the new notification may help in the reduction of sugar consumption. But would it? Eating sweets or taking a cup of tea with 2-3 teaspoons full is perhaps the only “luxury” a poor used to enjoy. Now with the soaring prices of sugar, this luxury will also be taken away from the poor.

In fact the price hike of sugar is based on the novel idea of the Ministry of Power, which had been advertising on TV channels which read, “If something is expensive, we must use it carefully and minimally.” So the people of Pakistan: Use less sugar as it is expensive.

And as if this would be the end to their miseries. The Ministry of water and power, which could not control the water of floods, is all set to electrocute the nation with a new power price formula which will push the country into utter darkness and chaos. And then the Ministry of Power will issue its warning: Electricity is injurious to health or even Water is injurious to health…..

Where has the electricity gone?

These days the country plunges into darkness as soon as the sunsets. And even before that, the entire day is spent without electricity, specially in small towns and villages where electricity is not available for almost 12-18 hours a day. This is happening in this modern age when access to electricity and water is being given top priority in almost all countries of the world. Even very under developed countries have at least electricity and water available to its people round the clock.

The question is why we don’t have it? Pakistan is a fairly developing country and stands out in its quality export products throughout the world. But the artificial shortage of electricity is badly affecting the industrial produce and thus the export as well. Besides the industrial needs, the agricultural sector is also hit hard since all tube wells run on electricity. And since the electricity in the villages is almost not available but for a few hours, the tube wells don’t run and thus a shortfall in the agricultural produce too.

Recently, someone shared the various sources of electricity through an e-mail to me. And it surprises me that that the total electricity producing capacity of the country stands at some 21000 MW, while the general demand ranges between 12000-15000 MW. So the big question again is: Why we have shortage of electricity and why the total installed capacity is not being utilized to rid the country of the menace of load shedding.

If we look back, just a few years back, in the days of the previous regime, there was no load shedding. And the moment democracy returned to the country, electricity became scarce. Isn’t it interesting? There have been news that after the much touted IPP under the patronage of the government of the present ruling party, now RPP (Rental Power Producers) are being introduced to address the shortage of the electricity. Such steps should have been taken if the consumption or the demand had exceeded the present installed capacity. Now even when we have means to produce electricity, as it has been produced in the previous regime, then why we don’t produce more to address its shortage and why we are resorting to RPPs?

The common citizen, and all the tax payers, do deserve a convincing answer to their woes, inconvenience and loss they are accruing from the shortage of electricity. Would there be any answer?

Jaho Jalal: The King says “Eat Cake (in candlelight)”

Once there was a king who ruled “a” country – or let me say there were many kings and a lone queen who ruled. Each ruled with disastrous ends and was replaced either by the bigger king or their military men. In one of the kings’ time, the king wanted everyone in his fist, so he committed many mistakes that led to his ouster by his very own military man. The military man though put many things right, did many blunderers too. Although, people had access to electricity, sugar or flour, there were grave mistakes committed by the military man when he meddled into the affairs of his law man and also to prolong his tenure, he “forgave” all earlier wrong doings of the thousands of people. But in the end, he had to pack up hurriedly and was replaced by a man who became the new king.

In the era of the new king, sugar became scarce and thus very expensive. People had to queue up the whole day long for a kg of the sweet thing, but returned home empty handed. In one place, many a people, including children and women died in a stampede when the crowd got impatient to get the sugar. Likewise, the flour also became a rare commodity and people took sack full of money to get a handful of flour. This was all being done in complete darkness as there was no electricity either.

Now the news have it that for extra electricity, people have to pay 45% more than what they are paying as the power being rented is very expensive (same as once the IPP did). It is also in the air that sugar price would cross the three digit mark and so would the flour.

So it is also being proposed to the king that he should go public and tell them to eat cakes (in the candlelight) as they would not have either the electricity or sugar and flour. Ready?
